5 tips for getting back on track after a vacation
I just returned from an awesome 7-day vacation at an all-inclusive resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. It was so great to get away and spend quality time with my husband and friends, while also getting some much-needed R&R!
However, as a mom of two, it’s nearly impossible for me to sleep in, even when on vacation. I utilized some of the extra time in the morning to stay active. I used the resort’s gym to strength train on 3 days, I went to 2 yoga classes and did some paddle boarding and snorkeling. I know that not everyone will have the time, access or desire to exercise on vacation. For me, it’s something I enjoy and I had plenty of opportunities for it. But remember that walking is a simple and effective form of exercise. If you’re walking a bunch for sight-seeing, that definitely counts! If you’re someplace where you can safely get in a long walk, go for it a few times during your trip.
Even though I kept up with my exercise, my eating habits were totally out of my routine. I enjoyed all kinds of foods and alcoholic drinks, as one should on vacation. And I don’t regret it one bit!
Now that I’m back home, I’m working on getting back on track. In the past, I’ve made a lot of mistakes with the transition back to reality and I wanted to share what I’ve learned. Here are 5 tips to help you get back on track after a vacation, time off or the holidays.
Stay off the scale. It’s normal and expected to put on some pounds during a vacation. Obsessing over the number gained, however, can lead to over-corrective, unhealthy behaviors. For now, put the scale away and focus on getting back into your normal routine.
Ease back into exercise. There’s no need for overly intense or double workouts to “make up for” your time off. Whatever your fitness routine was before vacation, jump back into that.
Eat food. Don’t punish yourself by skipping meals or starting a restrictive, unsustainable diet. Get back into your usual routine of nutritious and fulfilling meals.
Drink water. It’s likely that you’re a bit dehydrated (guilty!), especially if you drank a lot of alcohol. Focus on drinking water throughout the day, especially right before, during and after a workout.
Give yourself grace. Vacations are about having fun and making memories, and it’s almost impossible to stick to your normal routine. Don’t beat yourself up for the choices you made. Things will level back out over time.
